Low-costers, discounters, low-tariff and budget airlines – all these are the names of the same cheap type of air transport. The essence of this innovation, which is already becoming familiar – the opportunity to fly is cheaper, sacrificing some comfort and optional services. It is considered a great success to find an air ticket for 1 euro, as at the beginning of the season of low-costs. But the flight that costs 15-30 euros seems more real.

Cheap discomfort

The main approach of budget companies: “We give only the opportunity to fly, for the rest you pay yourself.” The absence of unnecessary “buns” really helps to reduce costs, so many classic airlines have started introducing lowcost-philosophy. For example, AirBaltic – the national air carrier of Latvia, or the International Ukrainian airlines.

There are also fanatical low-costers, in the pursuit of a total reduction in expenses, forgetting that they have passenger aircrafts and fly people to them. Places in airplanes of such companies occupy as in the metro at rush hour. Delays, problems with check-in and baggage are normal rather than exceptions. And the process of filing and reviewing the complaint is so exhausting that it’s easier to forget about your complaints and not to spoil your nerves.

However, we will not grieve in advance: most modern low-costers choose a “human” business model, similar to the model of traditional airlines. And the passenger, approaching the issue thoughtfully, will not even feel any discomfort. Do not feed on board? Why, it’s only 3 hours to fly! Snack at home or take in flight dried fruits, cookies or nuts – guides will not take away. Boring in flight? Beforehand, upload a movie or book to your tablet.

Sick lot of low-costers – luggage. Be prepared to do without it at all, pack hand luggage in your purse instead of in a backpack, and engage in an exciting repositioning of things at the airport from a heavier suitcase to a lighter one. If you clearly understand that you need more that only hand luggage – pay for luggage in advance on the airline’s website. So you will not avoid costs, but cut them at least twice.

What else do they save on?

Airport tax is a service charge for an airplane, but they are taken, of course, from passengers. To reduce the tariff due to this fee, companies choose cheaper airports, as a rule, those that are older and away from big cities.

The Hungarian Low-coster Wizz Air as one of the bases uses Katowice Airport in Poland – 100 km from Krakow. Often the airport is selected as a base in the city, but old and not very comfortable, and therefore inexpensive. For example, Zhuliany airport in Kiev, where also Wizz Air flies. Or Don Muang airport in Bangkok, which became the base for several Asian low-costers.

And that is not all. Do you think that everyone is obliged to bring passengers to the plane board? No! The bus also costs money! Planting “sleeves” is a cheap alternative to buses, but they are not free. Therefore, in the main Air Asia hub, the LCCT terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, passengers are walking from the gate to the plane.

Another saving article for a low-coster is parking. As for cars in the city, for airplanes it is paid. How to reduce the price? Landing, people go out, people come in, take off. And so the whole day. As a minibus, only a salon in between is cleaned. As a result, airplane loukosterov spend the night only in their airport-hubs.

Airport charges often depend on the arrival time of the aircraft. At night it is cheaper than in the daytime; in the peak of the tourist season is more expensive than at other times. Therefore, when buying a ticket, pay attention to the time of departure and arrival.

Paradoxically, the economy of budget airlines is an additional security guarantee. To save on repairs and spare parts for airplanes, low-costers try to fly on planes not older than 3-5 years, which warranty’s period has not been expired. After the planes have served 5-6 years, they are sold to other airlines.

Another obvious way to save money is to put more passengers on the plane. Therefore, low-costers often order planes, in which there are more seats than the classical airlines. Even a narrow passage between the seats gives an income – tickets for places with a large legroom or a window can be sold at a higher price!

Well, of course, pay the rent of the cashier and the cashier’s work – not for the low-coster. Tickets are almost always sold on companies’ websites, you can register for the flight (and need to!) In the same place.

How the action appears

To chase an empty airplane to and fro here is unprofitable. In reality, the average world occupancy of airplanes is about 70%, and every airline knows about it. Therefore, the prices for air tickets are set so that half of the passengers ensure the profitability of the entire flight. On the other hand, the airline knows that its flight will almost certainly pay off, but on the plane it will remain 20-30% of empty seats. Why not sell tickets to these places and not earn some more? So there are regular discounts and promotions from low-cost and classic airlines.

Early sale of tickets is a way to save not only for you. An incredibly cheap ticket with the date of departure in six months is not a curiosity. You are happy, because you saved. And the low-coster is satisfied, because he received your interest-free loan right now. And he does not have to return it, because most low-costers do not allow to take a ticket. Even a simple change in the date of departure or the name of the passenger may be more expensive than the initial price.
